300 years at the heart of Liverpool

We hope you have been enjoying our recent heritage themed newsletters, which draw on the wealth of archive material available on our My Bluecoat website. 

The site was created as part of Bluecoat's 300th anniversary celebrations in 2017, and has lots to explore, whether you have a special interest in heritage or are simply looking for a walk down memory lane.  

You can revisit a favourite exhibition, or discover a new one. Delve into historic documents, images and our archive poster collection. And if there's anything you would like to share with us, we would love to hear from you! Just get in touch using this form.
 
Bluecoat is a special place for many people. We have collected some of their stories for the website.

This week we feature three of them: Taher Qassim MBE who was chair of the Liverpool Arab Art Festival, which is based at Bluecoat; local musician and poet Alan Peters, who has a long relationship with the venue as teacher, performer and audience member; and musician Atarah Ben-Tovim who staged her first ever children's concert at Bluecoat.

Live at Bluecoat

This week’s highlighted collection focuses on performance at Bluecoat which has a long history stretching back to the early 20th century when the Sandon Studios Society put on plays, concerts, cabarets and dances.

There is little visual documentation of this period, but from the 1980s onwards we have images from music, dance and live art presented within, outside and beyond the building. Browse the collection here. 
 
 

a.P.A.t.T performance, 2008

Versatile Liverpool-based musical experimentalists a.P.A.t.T. were the first band to perform in the new performance space, just before the new arts wing opened to the public in March 2008. This film captures their 30-minute set.
You can watch episodes of The a.P.A.t.T. Lyfestyle Challenge Channel Show, made during lockdown, the first of them here. 
 
Music was an essential ingredient of school life, though limited to religious singing, accompanied by a school band. A Willis organ was installed in 1874 in the chapel upstairs.

This slideshow features images relating to music at the school as well as images of contemporary artists engaging with music and history in 2004.

This week we're delighted to share a selection of posters as chosen by Ali and Jim of Liverpool based design company Dorothy. They've picked six of their favourite posters from our archive, including posters from an exhibition by Martin Creed and the iconic performance of Jeremy Deller's Acid Brass. As a charity, we rely on the income generated by our cafe, bistro and events programme. While our building remains closed in line with guidance from Public Health England, we're losing a huge portion of our income.
